Hello,
I'm a descendant of "Me-ne-ah" Mary Hauser, Cheyenne...whose photo was posted in these threads. I'm going to see her photo in Rotterdam next month and our family had no idea that my great-grandmother's photo was in the Fotomuseum. Thank you very much to the historians here who are helping to piece our stories together after having them broken by Pratt himself at Carlisle and then further at the Chemawa boarding school. Mary was one of the first students at the Krehbiel Mennonite School in Halstead after leaving the Darlington School. mla.bethelks.edu/archives/elecrec151/eagle3.jpg
I believe this thread will also interest American football researchers as it involves Emil and Peter Hauser.
I'm having a mess of a time sorting through the Hermann/Herman Hauser/Houser marriage situation Herman Hauser was listed as Mary Hauser's father, but "Apple Antelope" was also listed as her father on another census even though her last name was "Hauser". It is in my oral history that we are descended from White Antelope. All of Herman's children were close and lived together at various times...possibly on the reservation while Herman lived off.
I have various names of his wives and mothers of his apparent and not so apparent children including:
-Ghost (Sand Creek Massacre survivor) Matches
-Annie
-Sis Goin
-Ben-hi-kish/Amy Broken Cup/Bunhzakiss (I found record of their marriage June 22, 1891) parents names listed were: Baskidish and Chumanin (China woman?)
-Mollie Curtis aka Sioux Woman (Her mother was a Sioux "Blanket Squaw" and I found the story of her marriage which was never consummated recounted in the book "Child of the Fighting Tenth: On the Frontier with the Buffalo Soldiers by Forrestine Cooper)
.
Some of these wives may be one person with many names. In his obituary, he is only mentioned to have been married to "two squaws". He was also said to have had 5 children when I can count at least 7 who took his last name including 2 Emils.
I'm pretty sure my dad's cousin heard that the second Emil Hauser (the first died in the fire at the mennonite school...Kreihbeltown) wasn't really Herman's son at some time when they travelled together to a probate hearing. I can't find probate records with names of family attached however. eu.oakridger.com/story/sports/2008/11/14/hausers-lost-part-halstead-history/63041745007/
I believe Herman Hauser was collecting children and or wives for land claims and the ability to stay on the land. I'm not sure though. This has left me very confused as to my lineage. I could be German/Cheyenne if Mary's parents were Ghost and Herman. I'd be descended from Sioux and scout Dick Curtis if Mary's mother was Mollie...but she never lived with Herman so I'd also be related to Short Teeth or possibly Big Nose. www.violinist.com/blog/LostRiver/20075/6973/
Any leads or translations to names here would be helpful. It is a great mystery to me. My
aunt had posted a well put together family tree over a decade ago before she died. There are mistakes in some of the entries, but others are accurate. olypen.com/zob/genealogy/DePoe-tree/Cheyenne/Cheyenne.html
