Bald Eagle headed a group of Pawnee Bill show performers in 1917. He might had been with the show earlier, but I would think the portraits of him were taken in that year, not in 1908. During his stay with Pawnee Bill at Luna Park, Coney Island, NY in summer 1917, he was asked to help recruiting volunteers for U.S. army service in World War I. Newspapers of the time reported, that for the first time ever a real “American” delivered an address on a United States battleship, the U.S.S. Recruit in Union Square, NY. With interpreter Tex Cooper, chief announcer at the Pawnee Bill show, and eight fellow Lakota he came to hold his speech. The latter were identified as Sam Lone Bear, Bear-in-the-Woods, Henry Kills-the-Enemy, Dave Earrings, Jasper Scout, Charles Brown Wolf, Paul Iron Nest and Luke Plenty Bird. Bald Eagle stated that although he had once fought the U.S. under the leadership of Sitting Bull, his one son now served in the U.S. army for his country. He regretted his age prevent himself from going to France to fight for America. sources: The Brooklyn Citizen, Sat., July 28, 1917 The Record, Sat. Yes, Californian, this Bald Eagle seems to be the same man. He was 65 years old at the time of the accident and on tour with the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus in July 1925.
