White Fox, circa 1874 Red Fox, White Fox, White Eagle White Fox's clothing Here's fascinating piece on the Pawnee White Fox and his two compatriots, all former scouts, who embarked on a trip to England, Denmark, Norway and Sweden in 1874, during the period of relocation to Indian Territory, to 'perform' for white audiences. Unfortunately, White Fox died of tuberculosis in Sahlgrenska Hospital in Gothenburg. While the other two wanted to 'bury' the body in a traditional manner, his clothes were 'bought' by mill owner James Jamesson Dickson who then donated them to the Gothenburg museum. Red Fox and White Eagle made a few more apearances before heading home to Nebraska via Hull, Liverpool and New York, while White Fox's body was used for 'scientific research' in a most grim manner. His remains were finally shipped back to Oklahoma to be laid to rest in 1996: historyclone.flywheelsites.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/doc_publications_NH2014WhiteFox.pdfwww.indianz.com/News/2019/08/28/pawnee-veteran-seeks-return-of-ancestors.asp

thanks Dietmar for sharing this. I continue to be disturbed at how these men were treated and regarded - nothing short than a freak show for the amusement of the masses, total lack of respect and of dignity. At my age of course I do recall the so-called ethnicities' shows that still existed well into the 1960's. Circuses routinely paraded peoples from different parts of the world in front of audiences and I even remember that the well respected local Zoo had an African Native village exhibit for which they brought in Africans that had to sit there in native costume. These types of things did not exactly cater to a shared sense of humanity, but rather fostered the "them" and "us" sentiment that often ingrained itself impressionable young kids. I personally think it is the ultimate indignity that a dominant, conquering culture can inflict onto a subjugated one and it had little changed since antiquity.
