There are three Seven Fire reservations in North Dakota. The northern part of the Standing Rock Reservation, a small north section of the Lake Traverse Reservation, and the third and last one is the Spirit Lake Reservation in north central part of North Dakota. i know a great deal about this reservation due to the fact that I have lived here for over fifty years.
Spirit Lake is named Miniwakan Oyanke (Mysterious Water Place) named for the Water Spirits who dwell in this lake. The lake is the second largest salt lake in the United States, the first being the Great Salt Lake in Utah. This reservation was established by the Sisseton - Wahpeton and Cut Head Yanktonai by the Treaty of 1867. The Pabaksa or Cutheads were included by the simple fact that they owned the land, were as, the Sisseton - Wahpeton were refuges from Minnesota. However the Cutheads all moved to Standing Rock, leaving behind some northern Yankton people. This reservation lies in Benson, Eddy, and Ramsey Counties, with Fort Totten as the agency headquarters. its principal town is Devils Lake, located off the rez on the north side of the lake in Ramsey County. There are some 9,000 tribal members. They were formerly known as the Fort Totten Reservation unil 1998 when the members voted to change the name to Spirit Lake Nation. The reservation is located on the south side of the lake which is approximately 40 miles long by 20 miles wide. About 350 Metis from the Turtle Mountain Reservation currently reside on the reservation, this occurred because they were boarded at the St. Michael Catholic Mission. The tribe has a casino, grocery store, and C-store (gas Station) located in the Mission District. Cinye80
