Rosebud Sioux Reservation, Unjinjintka Wakpa Oyanke (Place at Rosebud River) named for a southern tributary of the White River. They were also called Heyata Wicasa (High Up Men) because they live high up towards the Missouri River in Todd County, South Dakota. Their principal town is Mission, SD.
Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Wazican Ahanhan (Pine Trees Here and There). located Jackson and Shannon Counties, South Dakota. Modern residents have shortened the name to Wazi Paha Oyanke (Pine Hill Place). This reservation has the largest population of any of the Seven Fires locations. It is second only to the Navajo (Dene) reservation in the southwest, by population with some 20,000 tribal members. The principal town is Pine Ridge, SD.
Fort Peck Indian Reservation, Wahcinca Wakpa Oyanke (Poplar River Place),a northern tributary of the Missouri River. The modern name is Assiniboine - Sioux Tribes of Fort Peck. The Canoe Paddler and Red (Tipi) Bottom bands of Nakoda live on the west side and the Dakota / Lakota live on the east side of this 110 by 40 mile reservation. Oil was discovered giving some tribal members a steady and bountiful income. There are some 6,000 members of both tribes living on the reservation and 4,000 living in the surrounding area. Their agency is a Poplar, Montana, with Williston, North Dakota as its shopping location.
