Hello from Indiana. I am thankful to find this forum and to be included in the discussions!
Since I was a young child, I have been researching my great, great grandfather, Col. Hugh D. Gallagher. He was the Indian agent at Pine Ridge from 1886-1890. Royer replaced him. I am trying to find information on his time in South Dakota as well as in Chadron, Nebraska where he moved with his family to open a store after his position at Pine Ridge ended.
In 1886, Col. Gallagher moved to Pine Ridge from Osgood, IN with his wife and 5 young children (Charles, Bernard, Adele, Albert, Anna). He was involved in starting the Holy Rosary Mission school with Red Cloud and Fr. Jutz. Supposedly, Gallagher's five children went to school there. When he left the reservation, Red Cloud gave him several gifts, beautiful beaded work a relation in my family still has.
Charles, his eldest son, stayed on the reservation and eventually became a postmaster in Kyle. He married Nellie Farnum and they had one son, Paul Revere Gallagher, who also stayed in the area and was a ranch hand his entire life. I have been collecting information about all of these people for years but most of it is from books, newspapers, commission reports, Marquette archives, etc.
As my knowledge and awareness of the oppression and persecution of Lakota peoples has grown over the years (we never learned any of this history in school!), my interest in Col. Gallagher has evolved from a basic interest in family history to a desire to truly understand the direct role Col. Gallagher, as Indian agent, played in the suffering of the Lakota Nation. My desire has been to connect with descendants of Lakota peoples who might have known my relation—all were certainly affected by his actions as agent and still are. Someday, I hope to have the opportunity to apologize directly.
Thank you for your time and any information or thoughts you might share...
