Does anyone know the names of Hunkpapa chiefs and warriors who fought General George Crook's troops at the Rosebud on June 17th, 1876? I have read that Rain-in-the-Face was there. Gall and Crow King were apparently still leading their bands west from Standing Rock toward the great Lakota and Cheyenne encampment when the fighting was going on, and so did not participate in the battle. I know that Sitting Bull was already in the area but did not take part either, having recently undergone the Sundance ordeal. Were other Hunkpapa bands present?

According to Paul Hedren's Rosebud, Rain in the Face was there (p171); his references come from Eastman.

The Hunkpapas Rain In The Face, Runs Fearless, Old Bull, Circling Hawk, One Bull, Spotted Elk, and Jumping Bull, were all there. Sitting Bull was in no condition to fight yet as you mention, but he did ride with the Hunkpapas to the battlefield to give encouragement. There is no record (that I know) of other prominent Hunkpapas present.

Iron Hawk, a Hunkpapa teenager at the time (not the Oglala of the same name), was also present.

Thanks for this information. I discovered Iron Hawk's story of the battle online today and it was quite different from other first hand accounts I'd read.
