It came to my mind that the first "Curley" bogus (the one wearing war bonnet) could be Bull Don't Fall Down, the warrior who un-horsed Jack Red Cloud in the battle of Rosebud. Bull Don't Fall Down is the man in back row, sitting second from left and holding a staff. Maybe is it him? To me, they look much alike...

I don't think so, I'm pretty sure it's Bird-on-the-Ground! Bull-Don't-Fall-Down has a different look in his eyes which shows both on the dance photo you posted and the photos in the Fred Miller book (plate 19 and plate 35). Also, Bull Don't Fall Down had his own fine attire, he wouldn't have had to change clothing on the racecourse just to have is picture taken. It's true, Curtis had some shirts in his trunk that he put on various men, and it's true that both Spotted Jack Rabbit and Shot in the Hand wear the same shirt. Peggy Albright also mistook Bird-on-the-Ground for Bull-Don't-Fall-Down on plate 1 in her book on Richard Throssel. BTW, shouldn't we start a new Bird-On-The-Ground thread? Attachments:

It would be helpful to know when exactly the photograph was taken - according to the Crow census, Bird on the Ground was born 1849 and wasn't listed in the 1910, which would mean that he died sometime between 1908 (when Curtis photographed him) and 1910. Update: I found his death date - November 2nd 1905 Bull that Don't Fall Down (b. 1854) instead died in 1936. I agree that the man in the "Old Timers Parade" photograph in the Throssel book is in fact Bird on The Ground; however, I'm still unsure about him being the first "Curley". Not that I'm 100% sure the false Curley is Bull that Don't Fall Down, but it looks to me as a closer possibility. Here's the comparison between "Curley" and the two Miller photographs of Bull that Don't Fall Down: tipifan: I've a least one more photo of Bird on The Ground as a young man (a group photo in which we have also Medicine Crow and Iron Bull) - I'll post it tonight, together with the few info I have on him (taken from the Crow census and J. Medicine Crow's From the Heart of Crow Country)

Hi Jeroen, it's Curley and his wife (previously married to the River Crow chief Two Leggings) indeed, it's a F. Miller photo.

Hi Jeroen, don't know of any Apsaalooke named Crow Doctor, but that wouldn't mean much, considering the conundrum of translation of Native American names...my impression is that the guy looks very much like Good Luck, who was photographed in the Wanamaker series. I'll double-check it and let you know, as I'm not 100% sure.

Here's a comparison between Good Luck (left) and Crow Doctor...it might be the same individual, but I have to make an enlargement of Good Luck to be sure...
