Can you tell me what was the reason for braiding hair?
Was it obligatory or could Lakotas wear hair floating freely?
Was there any difference between women and men in braiding hair?
Since what age did children start braiding hair?

your hair style defined what tribe you were from, it also stated if you were going to battle or not, if you wanted to sitting a talk, it made known if you were married or single your hair defined who you were no was allowed to touch your hair unless it was your mother or mother aunts and your wife, most children have their hair braided as soon as its long enough caring for your hair is taught at a very young age, all your DNA is in your hair so we have a lot of rules about hair

Thank you, Ladonna. Tell me please, were braids for Lakota people "everyday style"? And what was the "war style"?

I never heard that one before.... When a man wanted to fight he left his hair long without braids, You see those picture of our people with one side not braided its because they are still at war. Caring for your hair is important part of our lives. a symbol of a woman's love was to braid her husband hair, it had nothing to do with war, if it did the women, grandma, grandpa and children would all be at war all the time.

each band or nation would braid their hair different so if you were coming across the prairie you would know which tribe or band you came from by your hair style.

JESSIE EAGLE HEART in the book «To Kill an Eagle» said (November 5, 1962I) said, that Crazy Horse wore braids in woman style: «My grandmother described Chief Crazy Horse as light complectioned, thin faced, straight nose and he wore braids. (Woman braids). His hair came to his waist».
What can it mean?

I believe that would be two braids but most Lakota wore two braids when i was young they would always say you pulled you hair back over the ear and braid that was woman style to braid over the ear is not. At least that what they would say when i was a child
