Wounded Knee Manderson, S.D. 21 July 1907 John Monroe, Interpreter
Red Bear Breath Ma-to-Nia-Luta Ogalala 56 years old
14 years old when he went on the first war party against the Rees two of whom were killed and he got one of the scalps. Eagle Bear was chief of the Sioux.
He never led a war party.
He was in 9 battles mostly against Rees.
He counted coup once on a Ree. They had a big fight. One Sioux shot a Ree and Red Bear Breath charged on the wounded Ree. Just as he was about to count coup his horse became frightened and threw him to the ground. The Ree who had a large knife grabbed him by the leg. He took away the Ree's pistol and also his knife with which he cut the hand that held him. He then scalped the Ree after which some other Sioux shot the Ree.
He considers the greatest leader of his people to have been Crazy Horse and General Miles of the whites.
His name came down from many generations from father to son. His own name before his father died was Last Elk.
He was the scalped Crow in the Sham battle, and like Picket Pin was nude.
He sang for Fisher to record.
