Meany Interview:
Wounded Knee
Manderson S.D. 20 July 1907
Joseph Pourier, Interpreter
Gray Grass
Pe-zhi-xota
Ogalala.
61 years old.
15 years old when he first went to war. It was against the Shoshones under Crazy Horse. Three Shoshones and 8 Sioux were killed.
He never led a war party but was mostly under Crazy Horse or other famous chiefs.
He was in twelve battles mostly against the Crows. Three times horses were shot under him.
In a battle at the mouth of the Big Horn against the Crows the enemy's village was attacked and the Crows had the Sioux retreating. They shot down Crazy Horse's horse. They saw the Crows trying to get the chief's scalp when Gray Grass ran back and took up Crazy Horse on his own horse and rescued him. He was about 24 or 25 at this time.
In this battle the Nez Perces and Crows combined against the Sioux. Scouts signaled each side for three days making ready for the fight. There must have been 1500 Sioux and 1000 Crows and Nez Perces in the battle. The Sioux lost heavily in horses and men. One Sioux when unhorsed was counted coup upon by three Crows one of whom he killed and the other two he wounded and one of these died afterwards. The Sioux finally rescued this warrior. The Crow who died from his wound was Great Bachelor who rushed upon the Sioux to strike him while the gun was pointed at his head.
He rescued four other warriors in the same way in other battles.
He never counted coup.
He considers Crazy Horse the greatest leader of the Sioux but he never fought against the whites and has no opinion as to the greatest of the white leaders.
When on the first war-path at a camp where there was a lot of sage, they wer holding horses and one fellow spoke up and said: "We will call this fellow "Big-Gray-Grass."
