Meany Interview:
Wounded Knee Manderson S.D. 20 July 1907 Joseph Pourier, Interpreter
Big Bend Ka-Ximi-Tonka Ogalala 62 years old
14 years old when he went on the first war party against the Hoheys. The leader had the name of Steamboat.
At 16 he led his first war party. It was against the Rees. Two Rees but no Sioux killed in the battle.
Three times he counted against the Hoheys. They struck a village of Hoheys across the Missouri near the Canadian line where they now have their reservation now. One of the Hoheys on horseback began to run. He chased him and unhorsed [him] with his lance.
In the same battle he struck a woman with his bow and a boy also counting first coup on each though both escaped and went back to the village.
On one occasion he and his wife, his son and three daughters were attacked by Blackfeet while camping out. His mother was killed in that fight. A bad band of Blackfeet was this but the family drove them off.
He was in eight battles mostly against the Crows but never was in battle against the white people.
He thinks Young Man Afraid of His Horses was the bravest leader of his people but never having fought the whites he has no opinion as to their greatest leader.
He made his medicine of roots himself.
