16 years old when he first went on the warpath. It was against the Pawnees. Ehan-te-wi-chua, Chasing Heart.
At 25 he led his first war party. It was against the Crows. It was not successful.
He was in thirteen battles mostly against the Crows.
He counted coup seven times: First against a Pawnee in the center of the fighting. He was the first to strike a wounded Pawnee who was sitting erect when he struck him with his bow. From this he was given his dead father's name of Shell Boy. The father had been a sub chief. Second -- against a Crow. They had surrounded ten Crows, one of whom was killed, then they rode up on a second one who was well armed and Shell Boy was the first to ride up and strike him with his sword. Third against a Shoshone. Shell Boy was leader of this party. They sighted two Shoshones on whom they charged and he strike one of the Shoshones with his bow. He was first to strike him. The other four coups were second and third coups on one Crows and one Ree and a Shoshone and a Hohey.
He was not in the Custer or the Wounded Knee fights.
He did not fast.
He uses medicine from flesh, his own discovery.
He used a shield of buffalo hid hardened by fire in the ground. It was a plane shield covered with buckskin for convenience.
He did not succeed to chieftainship because of his father's position but because of his own deeds.
He was with Crazy Horse when that chief was captured.
He thinks the greatest leader of his people was High Back who was killed in battle and after him was Crazy Horse, and of the whites Custer was the greatest leader.
