is there any known and positively identified photograph of [Joseph] White Bull of the Miniconjou when younger, i.e. 1880's to 1900 ? Surprisingly there isn't any early photograph of White Bull before 1900, or at least I haven´t seen one.

I would agree. The oldest photograph of WB I know is this one from 1908 (WB kneeling right side): Maybe this pic was shot about 1900 And this pic I have as "Mrs. White Bull 1920". Correct? Who?

Gregor,
Its great to see that earli image of White Bull I've not seen it before. do you have any other information on it, ie, where it was taken and when, and who some of the other people are?
I notice that White Bull wears two feathers, one that looks black whilst the other looks marked. Has anyone any idea what the colour or the markings might mean? Of course the dark one may have been coloured, maybe dark red, we'll never know, but he's chosen to wear them rather than a warbonnet as have many of the others.
Of course many of the photographs that we see of warriors wearing bonnets are not their own, but are instead part of a collection of clothing and artefacts that the particular photographer would have kept in his studio for just such an occasion. However, that being said, its interesting to see that whilst most of the other Indians are wearing traditional shirts and headgear of one form or another, White Bull, apart from the two feathers, has chosen to wear a white mans shirt and trousers.

According to my notes, the picture of White Bull mounted was taken near Pierre, South Dakota, in May 1906. A large party from Cheyenne River Reservation came and gave a series of 'Indian entertainments' in costume and 'ceremonial dances'. In the party were Hump, White Bull, Scar Leg, William Swan and Charging Eagle.

thank you Gregor, these are great pictures - one can see the fraternal similarities to his full brother (same biological parents) One Bull.

Maybe the Sans Arc Lakota White Bull. But they look more like Bannocks to me.

good point Gregor, I don't think that it is the Sans Arc named White Bull either, this image seems to date to around 1910 or so and White Bull the Miniconjou had decidedly very broad feature (wider face)
