The father of Chief Joseph (the younger), was known by the same name. He lead his Wallowa band of Nez Perces (Nimipu)until he died in October 1871. Then his son became the leading chief. I have always thought Gustavus Sohon´s sketch of 1855 is the only likeness of Old Chief Joseph. Now the Oklahoma Historical Society presents an old photogaph of Chief Joseph. Could it be him? digital.library.okstate.edu/chronicles/v012/v012p359.html

Chief Joseph was not one of the 1868 delegates who went to Washington and were photographed there by A. Zeno Shindler.

mmmh, this man looks a lot like the man labelled as chief Joseph above. It is a Charles Milton Bell photograph, possibly late 1880ies, so I guess it is not Old Chief Joseph.
