Interesting to read that the Crows only sent one delegate on the trip. Did others refuse to join, did the US only request one representative from them and if so, why?
The account also reads like this Crow man was not a headman. But of course this could just be the writing style of the white reporter, who may also have been unaware of the man's standing.
In any case, fascinating puzzle. Carlo

LeRoy Hafen´s book on Thomas Fitzpatrick calls him "a Crow sub-chief, evidently a volunteer" who "had come all the way from the council" (page 305).

The man standing in the middle of the Photo gives a good example of how bandolier bags were used (swung over both shoulders with bag and powderhorn in the back) to hold up the robe(or blanket). Kurz gives a view from the back in one of his drawings.

Pulled off the web, this image was taken at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, so the identifications are theirs:

Despite the man being identified as Oglala in the British Museum, I wonder if he is the Otoe, Wah-rush-a-menee, or Black Deer, mentioned in the first post. I wonder if this is the same man more than a decade later...

Yes, Grahame, he is identified variously as Black Deer or Black Elk, an Otoe/Missouria.
The two men of 1857/58 are Pawnee delegates.

Yes, Big Rib(s) - Oglala (?). I'm skeptical about the woman. I don't think it's Lola Montez. Attached is a photo of Lola with the Cheyenne Alights-on-a-Cloud .... and some minutes later ... aahhh, should have read all the posts Ok, Red Plume !

Dear friends! Thank you very much for such an interesting theme and especially for a new photo for me you posted on December 16. What do you think about some other photos of John Fitzgibbon. One often called Great Bear, Chief of Delawares; and Little Bear, Kaw? Can we hypothetically count these images for Black Bear, an Otto delegate;and Little Bear, an Iowa delegate? Attachments:

Very good question, Gleb. Personally I don´t think the identification of Great Bear as a Delaware could be correct.
So it is quite possible that the two portraits belong to the 1851/52 delegation that we have discussed in this thread.
