TWO LANCE Wahukeza Nunpa (c1829-1901). Oglala: Wablenica Band. Also known as United People Oyate Okijupi.
Born about 1828 or 1829, Two Lance probably married in the 1850s. He was a headman among the southern Oglala by the 1870s. He was with the Brule and southern Oglala who attacked the Pawnee at Massacre Canyon in 1873 and is mentioned several times as a leader of a village hunting in southern Nebraska in 1874. Often associated with Fire Lightning and Three Bears. In November 1874 while camped at Colorado Springs, the village lost a number of horses to white thieves. Two Lance settled at the Red Cloud Agency where he was at during the Great Sioux War of 1876-77. He signed the Black Hills treaty in 1876. His eldest son, who took on the family name Two Lance, served in Lt. Clark's Indian scouts in 1877. Lived remainder of his life on the Pine Ridge Reservation, in the Porcupine District. Died in June 1901.
I suspect that this Two Lance is not related to another family by this name among the Minneconjou/Sans Arc/Two Kettles (Saone). For more information on this family, see: amertribes.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=twokettle1&action=display&thread=443
I have not been able to find a portrait of the Oglala Two Lance, either the older man or his son. There is a Two Lance listed in a group photograph with Buffalo Bill Cody at Pine Ridge during the Ghost Dance troubles but I can't tell from the photo which one he is. Anyone know of a Two Lance photograph?
