High Bear - Hunkpapa - 1898 High Bear - Hunkpapa - 1898 High Bear was born circa 1847, died circa 1920. On the 1885 Standing Rock Ration list he had 15 lodges and 55 people under his care.

The Hunkpapa Akicita and band leader, Crow King, had a brother named High Bear .. could this be the same man? James McLaughlin wrote in his book 'My Friend the Indian' that High Bear died before Crow King. However, Crow King's two daughter's were listed in an annuities record from Standing Rock in 1885 as belonging to the band of a man named High Bear, .. one year after Crow King died. McLaughlin also mentioned that Crow King had a living brother at the time of his death but didn't mention his name, so it's possible that this was High Bear. Unfortunately so much of the existing written information is contradictory and confusing.

There was a younger man named High Bear who toured with Buffalo Bill's Wild West over a number of years. He was one of the party left behind in Salford on 4 May 1888 and I have almost conclusive evidence that he and Two Elk drifted around England before joining up with Buffalo Bill again in the spring of 1891, in either Belgium or Germany.
Same name, or same family???

Was he Hunkpapa? I'm doubtful that he may be the man I'm looking for, unfortunately.

I believe he was either Oglala or Brule but the way these guys moved from one tribe to the other you can never be sure.
'My' High Bear would be born c. 1860 but there may be a family connection. Then again, as in any society, there was some level of unrelated people with the same names. 'Standing Bear' seems to have been very common. I'm afraid I don't know any more but if I come across anything, I will come back to you.
