Does anybody know of any photographs of the Shoshone Chief Pocatello (1815-1884)? So far, I haven't been able to find any... Thanks!

It was worth a try, jinlian. I would have loved to see a photograph of him either.
I´m a little bit sceptical if the statue looks like Pocatello... rather like a typical Sioux chief in my opinion.

I'm not crazy about it too, but it seems the made an effort to be as close as possible to the likeness of Pocatello. www.valleypride.net/ProjectDetails.asp?ID=68I found this sketch, taken from a booklet about the town of Pocatello published in 1915, quite interesting: As pointed out in the above link, in 1915 there would have been people who had seen Pocatello in his last years, which would make it closer to the Chief's likeness than other iconographic creations.

Presumably, Chief Pocatello was photographed about 1868 – 70 by Andrew Joseph Russell. Russel named that photograph „Snake Chiefs“
Source : Chief Pocatello, the "White Plume" , by Brigham D. Madsen
Shoshone men did not originally wear warbonnets, but in the late 1800's some Shoshone leaders adopted this custom from their neighbor tribes.
So it seems, even Pocatello was wearing sometimes a warbonnet .

cimeno, this is the photograph by Russel labeled "Snake Chiefs": Does the author Madsen have any evidence that Pocatello is in the photo?

Hi Dietmar,
thank you for posting of this photograph
The author wrote on that photograph :
„ The man in the center may well be Chief Pocatello since his facial features resemble those of Pocatello`s brothers, Pokotel Pete and Pokotel Tom „
Thus, there is no complete proof, whether that photograph shows Pocatello , but I think , the presumption by the author is correct.

"Chief Pocatello Speech" By: Cleve Davis Speech made during the 46 Annual Shoshone-Bannock Festival in Fort Hall, Idaho, August 8, 2009. Much of the information used for this speech was obtained from Madsen's book Chief Pocatello and family oral history... Please see that link : www.chiefpocatello.com/chiefpocatellospeech.htmlcinemo

No, chicheman, it is not. It´s a portrait of Shoshone Chief Oiti.

Ok thanks Dietmar, I thought already this might not be correct, since it was said there does not exist a photo of Chief Pocatello. Danke und Grüße
