It is - you're right. I wonder if it's the one I'm thinking of, which might be the man born in the 1860s and died in 1927 - I think the nephew of the real White Bird. IT can't be the man in the photo above, though, because he would only be a boy at the time and this was taken 1877-9. I've looked through a Nez Perce dictionary for the word, "Swan," in the hope I could match it to the list of names Greene gives in the back of Beyond Bear Paw, but to no avail. Maybe the name given on the photo is a mistranslation, or matbe it's just wrong.

Nez Perce man, the brother in law of Hudson's Bay factor Angus MacDonald, 1860-1 Lawyer, 1861 And again Nez Perce man - all the above are Royal Engineers' photos Supposed to be Old Joseph Lawyer Lawyer Hal-lal-hot-soot (aka Lawyer I) the son of Twisted Hair, 1868 Jason (Kol-kol-shu-a-tash), 1868 Jason with interpreter, Perrin Whitman, 1868 Timothy (Tamason), 1868 You'll notice he's wearing the same shirt and leggings as Jason Timothy, 1868 Timothy, 1868 Timothy and Perrin, 1868 Nez Perce delegation to Washington, 1868 Front row L-R: Timothy, Lawyer and Jason There must be a better photo of this somewhere and I wonder if there's one of Lawyer in traditional clothing too. Timothy's son - supposed to be from 1871

Nez Perce in Idaho - I've seen various dates for this, right up to 1890, but I think it's from before Joseph headed for Canada. On the Snake River. The man in the centre is in the photo above Nez Perce camp. Not sure about this one. Nez Perce prisoners at Tongue River cantonment, 1877. Photo by Fouch. No, I can't see any Nez Perce either. Another Fouch - three Nez Perce - or possibly Crow scouts. Nez Perce in Kansas. You can see the way the artist has used two of the men from the first photo in this post - which dates it before the war. I wonder if the temporary camp is the one feature in the Hansard photos upthread. Sketch of a Nez Perce prisoner made at Leavenworth, 2 February, 1878. Nez Perce man photographed by Hezekiah Beck of Beck and Dillon Photographers, Winfield, Kansas. Another Beck photo: unidentiifed Nez perce mother and child. I would assume there'd be more by Beck, but these two are all I've come across so far. Nez Perce leaving for Idaho, 22 May 1885. I havn't seen the photo on which this is based.
