My grandmother has a pocket watch that was given to my great-grandfather from Baptiste Garnier. It was given to Baptiste from W. Seward Webb. It is inscribed:
To Baptiste Garnier United States Government Scout In memory of the hunting trip to Jackson's Lake and north fork of Buffalo Creek September and October 1896 From W. Seward Webb
It was given to my great-grandfather by Baptiste in South Dakota. I hope that this is helpful information to you all.

Currently on Ebay, you can purchase by auction (too expensive for me I´m afraid) a pair of pictures of Baptiste Garnier and his wife "Lizzie" [?]. It was in private possession, so it has never been seen before: On the same page is another photo of Garnier with, I believe, Frank Grouard by his side:

Baptiste Garnier (3rd from left) and his family, Fort Robinson. I am by far a photo expert but, I think it is very possible that in this photo, Little Bat would be the man on the far left. I compared what Little Bat is wearing in the photo above in this thread, to what the man on the far left is wearing, in the group photo. (The leggings and the vest) kakarns

Speaking of Eulalie Garnier, I remember having read about her marrying the (in)famous Frank Grouard (will check the source of this info). Has anybody additional facts about the Grouard/Garnier connection? In a book titled; "Blood Song" by: Terry C. Johnston, pg. 75 It is stated that Grouard was married to a sister of, He Dog. However, I am not sure which one of Grouard's wives, this would have been. Interesting information though. kakarns

After viewing the photo from the Grouard Thread (see above) and comparing it to the group (family ?) photo in this Thread, does anyone besides me, think that it could be possible that, the third man from the left might be Frank Grouard ? kakarns

kakarns,
On Frank Grouard and He Dog: John Colhoff, the Pine Ridge interpreter, was a close friend of He Dog's. According to Colhoff's correspondence with my late Swiss friend Joseph Balmer, He Dog took Grouard into his family in August 1873 after Grouard left the Hunkpapas. He Dog was newly married, without children, and had plenty of room. Grouard seems to have based himself with He Dog for the next 18 months or so, departing for Red Cloud Agency and the white man's world in early 1875. Colhoff doesn't say anything about Grouard marrying a He Dog relative.

Has anybody additional facts about the Grouard/Garnier connection? Hello..I also know that Eulalia "Lallie" Gardiner/Garnier was also married to a Joseph Knight in Fort Laramie, Wyoming. She is buried there at the old Cemetery just outside of the Fort. Her Headstone still stands, for many don't, near the headstones of Joseph Antoine Janis's sons, William and Peter..I have a picture of it somewhere in my files. But it reads Eulalia Knight, wife of Joseph Knight..age 26 years, died April 1866 Deb

Also concerning the indivudual pics of Baptiste Garnier and his wife Julie (Make Shine) Mousseau that were on Ebay. Just curious if you remember how much they were going for. Does anyone know who else is in the pic with Baptiste where he and another man are sitting with three men standing behind them. I hadn't seen that picture before. Thank you

In reply to Deb's post about Lallie Garnier being buried by William and Peter Janis in the Fort Laramie Cemetery. My family stopped at the cemetery three weeks ago to take pics of the graves of William, Peter and Mary Janis who are buried there as they are siblings to my husband's gg-grandpa Antoine Janis (son of Joseph Antoine Janis). I did not see Lallie's gravestone by their graves. I have pics of their gravestones. They each have their old original gravestone as well as one that lays down in the grass with all three of their names, birthdates and deathdates. I can try to post the pics once I figure out how since I am new to this site. There was a grave marker a little distance from the three Janis siblings headstone but I don't remember whose name was on that stone. It looked like a military headstone if I remember right. Those four are the only graves on the west side of the driveway, with the Janis' stones being close to the flagpole. Janet

Another famous Half Oglala Scout was Billy Garnett. The son of the COmmander of Fort Laramie and future Confederate General William Garnett who was killed in Picketts Cjharge at Gettysburg. Garnett was raised by his Sioux mother and her 2nd husband John Hunter. He was fluent in Lakota, English, and Spanish.
Garnett and Garnier were two of the best Scouts in the U.S. Army during the Sioux Wars. They travelled exstensivly with General Crook,General Miles, and Lt. Custer. They both saw action in many battles and are directly responsible for locating many Sioux villages and inducing many Sioux to come to the reservations. Without men like Billy Garnett and Baptiste Garnier, the U.S. Army would have not had the success that it had against the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapahoe.
Billy Garnett said that Baptiste Garnier is the best scout he ever saw. That there was not a trail he could not follow. General Crook said that Garnier was his best scout.
