Although it probably doesn´t help to find out his name, I think I have found another portrait of this man, who likely is a Hunkpapa man, at least it was said so at an auction site: here´s the second portrait:

Maybe the photographer in Dayton, Ohio, is a hint that the man has been a performer in a Wild West Show?

Some Lakota photos from around the internet... Jack Red Cloud - and his wives? Supposed to be taken in the 1880s but he looks older than the Grabill/Trager/Moreledge/Kuhn photo taken around Wounded Knee Unidentified - same backdrop, though Part of the same group of photos as the two above, but the background isn't clear This was in the same lot Wild West Show Lakota? Lakotas at the Asay Store, Rushville, 1900. The store was where the Wild West Show Lakotas would go to spend their scrip. Or maybe it was this store... And another possibility; this time dated 1893 The reverse of the photo above. Sadly, it seems that the photo I posted is only a detail of the original. You'll note that the man numbered 8 is Jack Red Cloud, but on the list above there is another Red Cloud and Rocky Bear, (numbers 5 and 9) who are, presumably, on the opposite side of the image. Is the kneeling man at the left with goggles Standing Bear? The Rushville photos were taken from here: sites.google.com/site/hindmanhistory/rushville-main-streetJ E Meddaugh operated in Rushville, as did A. H. Baumann so I wonder if one of them is the photographer Crazy Jack Long Dog, a Lakota in Moose Jaw Wild West Show Lakota on the town - in Glasgow, I think Unidentified

IMHO the ladies could be Roan Horse (wife) and Lucy Red Cloud (Jack's daughter with Nancy Poor Elk). Or any ideas?

Interesting pictures, Grahame, as always. I don´t have any more information than you. I've noted in my records that Little Elk was from Rosebud.

The photos of the men with the tipis in the background, and the man on horseback in the light colored had are all Blood Blackfoot. Late 1880s in the vicinity of Gleichen Alberta. A collection of photos from that event are in theVancouver City Archives.

Thanks, Allen. I've just come across a photo of Dog Child, clearly taken at the same location as the men in the tipis. When I checked the Vancouver Archives, found this, which is the complete image I was thinking of (though not the tribe I thought): And from the Vancouver archives, the complete photo featuring the young men and the tipis: Thanks again.

One of Grahame´s pictures above shows two Lakota wearing feather-bonnets. Our Bavarian friend Wolfgang identifies them as Thomas American Horse and Little Wolf. The were part of the 'Völkerschau' group of 'Hagenbeck's Tierpark' (zoo) in Hamburg, Germany, 1910. The photos were taken probably by Jacobson: Little Wolf & Thomas American Horse Thomas American Horse & Little Wolf Danke Wolfgang!!
