While reading the journals of Charles Larpenteur I came across the Yanktonai chief Black Cat Fish. Is there anything documented left of the fellow? He paid Larpenteur a visit in 1864, when Larpenteur was traveling upnorth to Ft.Union.

Black Catfish, Hogan Sapa, was a hereditary leader of the Pabaksa or Cuthead band of Yanktonais. He was the son of the famous chief Waneta, the Charger, and succeeded him, along with his brother Waanatan, who led another band, which later settled at Devils Lake Reservation. According to historian Mark Diedrich Black Catfish died during the winter of 1867/1868 and his son Bear Nose became leader of his Cuthead band.

Hogansapa means a Catfish AKA a Bullhead fish. it does not mean BLACK Catfish. He died at Ft. Peck Rez (Poplar, Montana). His brother Red Thunder lived at Standing Rock (Cannonball / Shields, ND area). The third brother Charger Waanatan as already mention lived here a Spirit Lake (formerly Devils Lake, Ft. Totten Rez).

Welcome louisgarcia,
good to have you here. We know too little about the people at Devils Lake. We will be glad to hear more from you!
Unfortunately I only know a few Lakota/Dakota words, but sapa means black, doesn´t it? Does it have a different meaning here? Could you please clarify?
Thanks.

Dietmar: Hogansapa is a Catfish. Hogan = fish, sapa = black. A catfish is Black Fish in Dakota. We call this species of fish a Bullhead in ND. heat wave here 7 above, 33 below earlier this week.

Hogan is "fish", sapa is "black", so the name Hogansapa merely means "Blackfish". Howasapa is "catfish" (phonetic spellings - the "n" in hogaN is sort of silent, marked by a n with a tail.

Kangiyuha: I guess I should have consulted my Dakota dictionary. Thank you for correcting my mistake. A catfish is just Howasapa, an abbreviated form of Hogan, owasin, sapa. I looked on the Ft. Peck Census of 1909 and 1910. #157 Hoasapa husband age 72 #158 Wakanmani wife age 66. But I guess this must be Bear Nose. Louie
