Mahto Ocinsica or Mato Knaskiyan Mad Bear was born in Minnesota near the Mississippi River in 1836. As a young boy he was called Watogla, "Wild", in the Lakota language. As an adult, he was given the name Mahto Ocinsica, Mad Bear. He belonged to the Lower Yanktonais people. Mad Bear was recognized as an Itancan (Chief) by his people, as well as the non-Indians who regarded him as a Chief. He served as Itancan of "Mad Bear Country" along the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. Mad Bear's camp consisted of approximately 300 people. The Mad Bear camp is now under 30 feet of water from the Oahe Dam. Mad Bear's father was Loud Thunder and his mother was Black Lightning Woman. Mad Bear's brothers included Elk, Crazy Bear, Walks in Wind, Bob Tail Bear, Crow Feather and Black Cloud and a sister Refina Mad Bear. Mad Bear had two wives, Leading Woman and her sister Two Generations. Chief Mad Bear was a kind and wise person, and when young, he had been a member of the Fool Soldier Band. This band had rescued some white people who had been taken prisoners in the Minnesota uprising in 1862. Mad Bear died in 1915 and is buried at Wakpala, South Dakota. Done by Robert Gipp Mad bear signed the Fort laramie treaty of 1868. Chief Mad Bear, Morphrodite Creek, Lower Yanktonais had 32 lodges under his care in 1873. According to 1885 Ration list Chief Mad Bear had 33 lodges and 143 people in his care.
