Hello! My father and I collect important historical photographs. We’re having trouble identifying this one and hope y’all can help. My father believes it is a salt print but I’m leaning more to albumen. It measures 4.5 x 3.75 and the mount is 6.5 x 5.5. No writing or photographer stamp. Excited to learn more about this! Thanks

Hi wbjayhawk,
thanks for sharing your picture. I can´t say that much, but the Native people from the way they are dressed remind me of the pictures Joel E. Whitney took of Dakotas and Ojibwas in the 1860s in Minnesota. I would tend to believe they are Ojibwa, judging from the floral designs on some clothes.
So just a guess, but it hope it helps.
Dietmar

I had this as a group of Ojibwe from the 1880s but I have no details about the photographer or location. Maybe Frank Jay Haynes? Where? As Dietmar says, Minnesota - maybe Manitoba.

Thanks! Any idea who the Caucasian men are in the photo? Missionaries perhaps? I would agree with 1880.

Okay, I've been digging a little further. The photographer is NJ Trenham and it was taken at Alexandria, Minnesota in April 1877. Here's the reverse: I suspect they're just curious townsfolk, perhpas mingled with some Metis.
