I have been reading a lot of excellent material on this board and have registered to post a question I can't find a definitive answer to. So forgive me for posting so quickly after joining. I have been a follower for a while. The question. It seems Man Afraid of His Horses was at the Grattan Massacre where Conquering Bear was killed. I also understand that Crazy Horse was there as well. Was this the father of Young Man Afraid of His Horses? And were he and Crazy Horse acquainted at the time? Was Young Man Afraid also witness to the massacre? Thank you for your help. I'm looked for places where Young Man Afraid and Crazy Horse crossed paths.

Old Man Afraid of His Horse (c. 1807/8-1889) was present at the Grattan fight in 1854. His son, later known as Young Man Afraid of His Horse, was in the Oglala camp, a youth of 18 or so. Crazy Horse was younger, I think 13 at this time. He was also in the Oglala camp. The families were closely connected and knew each other well. In 1835 Old Man Afraid of His Horse had adopted as a hunka (ceremonial relative) one of Crazy Horse's cousins.

Thank you! It has been said that Crazy Horse's attitude to the whites was impacted by the Grattan fight and his experience in the camp. Could the same be said of Young Man Afraid? In other words, could it be said that the Grattan fight impacted both and shaped both their attitudes and their future involvement in Red Cloud's war?

I'm sure that the attitudes of both boys was shaped by the Grattan affair. Just from it being such a dramatic and momentous event. But there's 12 years between Grattan and Red Cloud's war, that's plenty of time for other influences. Now in their mid-20s (Crazy Horse) and coming up 30 (Young Man Afraid) both young men joined the war parties against the Bozeman Trail posts. This despite the fact that Old Man Afraid of His Horse was trying to steer a negotiated solution out of the crisis.

Thank you. I appreciate your insight. I visited Young Man Afraid's grave a few weeks ago. It's kind of sad how that all spun out. The people on Pine Ridge are still impacted by those old friendships and falling-outs. That history doesn't go away. Thanks for your comments.
