I am searching for information on Alice Bluebird.
Oral history:
She was about 4 years old at Little Bighorn.
Red Cloud was her Uncle.
She had lived in Canada.
She married Daniel O'connell, had a son Wilbert O'connell 1886.
She left her son when he was young to return to her Sioux family.
In later years she wrote a letter to her son Wilbert O'connell.
She was said to have lived to be a hundred (based on dates this may have been an exageration. She likely born 1870 or 1872 and her son Wilbert O'connell 1886-1956).
I've found two close matches, but I need more information to confirm if either are Alice Bluebird.
Sitting Bull's Surrender Census 1881 lists Family 684- White Thunder (father) Pretty Woman (mother) Bluebird (daughter)
I am guessing "Alice" is a school name and it would be more likely she would have adopted White Thunder as a surname (so this is probably not her). Other details of approximate age and Canada match.
Mike Stevens lists a Standing Horse (mother) Bluebird (daughter). Standing Horse and daughters/granddaughter are in Pine Ridge in multiple Indian Census Rolls. (Census 1888 has Standing horse but Bluebird listed with mother of Growls Again. Other census following have her with Standing Horse as mother).
If anyone knows more information I would appreciate it.
Wilbert O'connell (1886-1956) lived in Chicago, Illinois. He lied about his age to join the military and is listed with a birth date of 1884. I've been told there is a marriage certificate for Daniel O'connell to Indian Woman. I think the marriage date would have been 1885 possibly in Illinois.
I have a photo of Wilbert O'connell, wife Gertrude M. Little and sons Wilbert Joseph Dempster O'connell (1917-2005) and John Francis O'connell (1920-2016).
