Leslie Smith, born in Sharon, Connecticut 23 October 1862 to Edmund R. Smith and to Elizabeth DeCost, née Burnett. He accompanied his younger brother DeCost Smith, the famous painter / illustrator and author to the West to visit the various Indian Reservations in Dakota Territory, Montana and elsewhere interviewing and documenting Native Americans, photographing and painting their subjects and also collecting every-day use objects and artifacts from the various tribes. Neither Leslie nor his brother DeCost had children and upon their deaths their collections were willed to the Heye Foundation of New York which became part of the American Museum of Natural History and Smithsonian collections.
