Hey guys, I got this message to my websites guestbook from man named La Honda: "Great site, but under Tribes-Sioux-Brule, the photo you have placed for White Thunder is incorrect, your showing another profile of Chief Two Strike, he's the adoptive father of my Great Grandfather, I know the face. Look at www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/post/legends/vpost?id=2455745 for varification." ...can any of you take a part and say your opinion about the White Thunder/Two Strike matter? Thanks guys... This is the picture he is talking about: ...and here is Two Strike: I think those are two different men, what say you?

Hi China Man ;D
both photos were taken by Alexander Gardner in 1872 and both show indeed Two Strike, the Brule.
I hope you agree we should install threads for both men, I suggest to change the name of this thread to "Two Strike" and start another one as "White Thunder". There are plenty of photographs to find for these Lakota leaders.
Best wishes to Finnland

Hmmmm.... the Captain Clark plate looks like it's from the same session as the photo I posted and he looks older than he does in the Bell photos from 1891. Two Strike and family - J. H. Hamilton:

This is some biographical data from Donovin Sprague´s "Rosebud Sioux" (Arcadia Publishing): Two Strike “Numpkahapa” Born 1815 near White River Valley, Nebraska, died 1913 It is believed that the mother of Two Strike was connected with Sitting Bull´s Hunkpapa band. wives: Bear Heart (Oglala) Standing/Her Good Horse (Oglala) Brown Eyes (related to Black Crow family, Brule) children: daughter: Takes Pity On Them (born 1848), married to John Grass! daughter: Good Whirlwind (born 1848) daughter: Brown Woman (born 1851) son: Little Hawk (born 1855), aka Joseph Little Hawk son: Plenty Pipe (born 1858) son: Two Charger (born 1862) son: Arthur Two Strike (1865-1909) married to Maggie “Blue Eyes” Metcalf (1899-1937) daughter: Noisy/Black Spotted Horse (born 1872) another daughter mentioned in the book: Sorrel Horse Here´s one of Two Strike´s wives who accompanied him to Washington in 1872. Does anyone know who she is?

In a phone conversation with Donovin Sprague, March 27, 2006, he told me that the three wives of Two Strike
1. Bear Heart 2. Standing or Her Good Horse 3. Brown Eyes
were all cousins. 1 and 2 were Oglalas; Brown Eyes was a Brule of the Black Crow family. Re Dietmar's question, Donovin said that Brown Eyes was the wife in the 1872 photographs.
1900 Rosebud Census says that Two Strike was born June 1830 [surely too late; 1820 is the usual approximate date] in North Dakota; both his parents in Montana - his father Brule, mother Miniconjou. He was still living with Brown Eyes - she born June 1824, they married for 49 years, i.e. since 1851.
John Grass (Sihasapa) did marry a Brule woman when he was a young man, but I believe they were divorced or she died young because his only known wives after about 1875 were two sisters, daughters of chief White Swan of the Miniconjou (Glaglahecha band). This was the White Swan who died in 1866, his son (brother to the Grass wives) White Swan III was chief in the period 1868-1901. He and John Grass were very close friends.
