Indian Experiences by DeCost Smith, 1943 The Caxton Printers Ltd., Caldwell, Idaho, hardcover, octavo format, 387 p.American painter, illustrator and writer DeCost Smith (1864 - 1939) chronicles scenes of Native American life and describes some of their activities, on his western journey of 1884. He eventually amassed a valuable collection of artefacts and papers that became part of the American Museum of Natural History, and Smithsonian collections. The book has been published posthumously and was based on the author's personal experiences while having spent time at the various reservations during the 1880's and having personally met and interviewed numerous notable participants of the the then recent Indian wars. Smith also had a great interest in cultural aspects of the Native Americans.
