In July 1903 Addison E. Sheldon interviewed several Oglalas at Pine Ridge, including Red Cloud and American Horse. He also interviewed Eagle Hawk, who said he was 60 years old at the time, making his birth year ca. 1843. He died in 1904.
A quick check on the man produces some conflicting results. According to Wagner, Participants in the Battle of the Little Big Horn, 141, he was (1) born in 1832 (which is at odds with Eagle Hawk's own calculation), (2) he was part of He Dog's Soreback band, and (3) he was a brother of He Dog.
That last bit threw me off, as I have not seen him listed anywhere else as He Dog's brother. Lone Man, Bad Heart Bull (Sr.), and Short Bull were He Dog’s best known brothers, but he may indeed have had several others. However, given the flexible use of the Lakota term for ‘brother’, Eagle Hawk could very well have been He Dog's cousin. For example, a man named Monster (b. ca. late 1830s) is listed as another older brother of He Dog (source: Alex Charging Crow papers), but he may have been a cousin.
Wagner also states that (4) Eagle Hawk's son was Joseph Eagle Hawk, but several sources have him as He Dog's son (eg. Hardorff, The Death of Crazy Horse, 131). Perhaps adopted? Given the last name, I would assume Eagle Hawk was his blood father. At the very least, it's safe to assume that He Dog, Eagle Hawk, and Joseph Eagle Hawk were close.
Finally, does anyone know the political status of Eagle Hawk Sr.? Minor tiyospaye leader, or more important? He mentioned that he was away on the war path while the Ft. Laramie Treaty was being signed in 1868, and thus seemed to point out that he would have been one of the signatories if he had been there.
Any light on Eagle Hawk would be most helpful.
