This my first post, so I'll just lay out what I've been able to find soo far, if anyone can go further back or elaberate on this part of my family tree that would be welcomed.
Sitting Holy (Wakan Iyotaka) a Wablenica Oglala born about 1862-64
according to the Tiyospaye site
In the book "Participants in the Battle of the Little Big Horn: A Biographical Dictionary of Sioux, Cheyenne and United States Military Personnel", Sitting Holy is listed at age 13 Future husband of "Blanket",
The first couple censuses he is listed as Sitting Medicine and his wife is listed as Good Robe, I believe this is just a mistranslation, from what I've seen alot of names seem to evolve in the 1880s and 1890s depending on how they are translated and altered to english. It also appears that the names and ages of his sisters get mixed up a bit between the records.
1886 census, he is listed as
Sitting Medicine 23
Good Robe 18 wife
Shell 13 sister
Yellow Eyes 19 sister
Wears Eagle 2 niece
Clown 50 mother
1887

Jennie Yellow Eyes 20
1895
Sitting Holy 33
Blanket 29 wife
Jennie Clown (Yellow Eyes) 22 sister
Brown Eyes 32 married to Sun Bear
Susie 11 daughter
1896 This is the earliest I have found of his involvement with Buffalo Bills Wild West Show.
1897
Sitting Holy 35
Blanket 31 wife
Jennie Clown 24 sister
1898
Sitting Holy 36
Blanket 32 wife
Jennie Clown 25 married James Little Chief 28
In regards to the Gertrude Käsebier photographs from this time frame, there was a Luke Big Turnips born 1876 son of Big Turnip (born 1848) and Lone Woman (born 1856) however I belive with the rosters and contracts I've found I think its safe to say the photos are of Sitting Holy and that maybe Gertrude just forgot what names went to which photos, also I dont belive Sitting Holy was ever a "chief" of anything, it was a wild west show, I'm sure everyone with a head dress was called a chief.
1899
Sitting Holy 37
Blanket 33 wife
1900
Sitting Holy 38
Blanket 34 wife
1901
Sitting Holy 39
Jennie Sitting Holy "Blanket" 35 wife (a little strange that her name is now her sister-in-laws name, but the age still matches "Blanket")
1905
Sitting Holy 43
Jennie Sitting Holy "Blanket" 41
After 1905 it looks like Jennie Sitting Holy disappears from the record
1907
Sitting Holy 45
Mary Sitting Holy 23 wife, daughter of Yellow Bear (1848-1913) and his second wife Day Holy (1855-1930)
1910 George Wilber Sitting Holy is born
After 1910 Sitting Holy and Mary's son George Wilber Sitting Holy traveled with them as part of the show, he is listed Geo Sits Holy and George Sitting Holy in the childrens section of the rosters/contracts.
1916 John Sitting Holy is born, in 1920 he is listed as died.
George continued to do shows into his adulthood as part of the 101 Ranch Real Wild Weast and Great Far East Shows.
1925 last census with Sitting Holy, may have died this year
Sitting Holy 63
Mary Sitting Holy 41 wife
George (listed as Wilber) 15
1926 census only shows Mary and George (listed by his middle name Wilber)
by 1930 Mary marries Alex Lakota, George is listed as step son on the census.
1934 George marries Ella Little Spotted Horse, daughter of David little Spotted Horse (1863-1934) and Eliza Fire Thunder (1862-unk), together they have my grandfather Russell L. Sitting Holy that same year.
