hide scraper made of elk antler, quite old - Northern Plains ca. 1850's to 1870's. Such items were treasured possessions among the plains culture women, often passed down through the generations. Note the dark stain at the end of the object which is due to the animal's grease. Faintly visible near the end of the handle is an incised cross - possibly symbolizing the sacred four cardinal directions. click onto the image to enlarge
