It is only a myth. He was a tall man indeed, but if you look at the 1877 Sioux delegation to Washington pictures, you can plainly see that there were so many others Lakota just as tall as him if not taller. First photo, Touch The Cloud third from left standing. Second from left next to him is Spotted Tail Junior, just a trifle shorter than Touch the Cloud, fourth from left also standing next to him is Hollow Horn Bear, just as tall as Touch the Cloud..
Second photo standing second from right is again Spotted Tail junior, near him first from right is Swift Bear a good half foot taller than Spotted Tail junior. Third from right Spotted Tail his father and fourth from right,Red Clod, both men are much taller than Spotted Tail junior. First photo shows Touch the Cloud been barely taller than Spotted Tail junior in contrast with Swift Bear, Spotted Tail and Red Cloud much taller than Spotted Tail junior. Swift Bear, Red Cloud and Spotted Tail were not known to be very tall men and the three according to the photos seem taller than Touch the Cloud.

Hello ted,
How tall was Touch The Clouds? One guy said he was 280 pounds with no bodyfat. Judging from the picture, if that is him, the Lakota in that picture looks to be around 6 foot 6". Judging from the other pictures, either:
1. That picture I posted is not Touch The Clouds (from Wikipedia) 2. The other Lakotas in the delegation picture are all over 6 feet.
Touch The Clouds had a brother named Roman Nose. Not the Roman Nose who died at Beecher Island. Here is a quote about Touch The Clouds brother: Physically imposing in stature, there are several historical references to Hook Nose's flamboyant, intimidating personality and battle prowess. Isaac Coates, General Winfield S. Hancock's surgeon, observed a verbal confrontation between Hancock and Hook Nose outside Fort Larned in April 1867. Coates wrote in his journal; "of all the chiefs, Roman Nose attracted the most attention. He is one of the finest specimens, physically, of his race. He is quite six feet in height, finely formed with a large body and muscular limbs. His appearance, decidedly military, and on this occasion, particularly so, since he wore the uniform of a General in the Army. A seven-shooting Spencer carbine hung at the side of his saddle, four large Navy revolvers stuck in his belt, and a bow, already strung with arrows, were grasped in his left hand. Thus armed and mounted on a fine horse, he was a good representative of the God of War; and his manner showed plainly that he did not care whether we talked or fought..

The picture posted above is indeed Touch The Cloud by James Hamilton from his "CATALOGUE of STEREOSCOPIC VIEWS of the NORTHWEST" number 129.

Well I guess the mystery is solved. Touch The Clouds was really 5 foot 9. But he had a big ego.
