The Swiss have had a deep and long connection to Native America - well known artists depicting early renditions on Native American peoples and their lives were Karl Bodmer, Peter Rindisbacher and Rudolf Friedrich Kurz - Bodmer being native from Zurich, Rindisbacher and Kurz from Bern. It is thus no surprise that there are several collections of Native American artifacts in Swiss museums. One is the Bern Historical Museum website: www.bhm.ch/en/exhibitions/permanent-exhibitions/american-indians-diversity-of-cultures-in-america/Among the items in their collection is a buffalo robe that belonged to the Mandan venerated warrior and Chief, Mato Tope. This robe has been illustrated by Karl Bodmer in 1834. There are also a pair of moccasins and a pipe that Sitting Bull had reputedly given to Friedrich Schenk from Bern, in 1881/3 clerk at the sutler's store at Fort Randall. a brochure on the Native American collection Podium_BHM_3_2009.pdf (1.14 MB)
