Hello, My name is Jeremy Little Thunder from Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. I am searching for my great-grandfather Harry Thunder Hoop's genealogy. My grandmother's name is Eunice Thunder Hoop - Little Thunder and her mother is Ruth Yellow Hawk - Thunder Hoop, she married Harry Thunder Hoop. Any help is most appreciated. Lila wopila tanka lena eciciyepelo (a heartfelt thanks I give you).

The Thunder Hoops were a very important family among the Miniconjou (Mnikowoju) division of the Lakota. Across the period 1790-1820 Thunder Hoop, Cangleska Wakiyan, certainly an ancestor of Harry Thunder Hoop, was an important Miniconjou chief. He accompanied a Lakota delegation to St. Louis in 1790 to meet the Spanish authorities there. In 1804 he was noted by Lewis & Clark as one of three major chiefs of the Miniconjou.
A later Thunder Hoop married a daughter of Roman Nose, aka Afraid of His Shield (Wahacanka Kokipapi, They Fear His Shield), an important headman related to head chief Lone Horn.
I'm not sure how that later Thunder Hoop ties in with your great-grandfather, Jeremy. What were Harry's dates? -- that could help us take it further. Hope this helps.

Sorry, I took so long to reply. I visited my great-grandparents resting place this evening and Harry Thunder Hoop's engraved stone reads: Father Harry Thunder Hoop Died November 21, 1955, St. John 20:29, Dakota Hymn No. 12, Chief among the Sioux Tribe.
