At fourteen he went against the Asperoke with a party which killed four near the Bighorn mountains. He participated in many battles against the Apsaroke, Shoshoni, Blackfeet, Cheyenne, Assiniboin, Omaha, and Ute, the severest being that with the Apsaroke and Nez Perces at the mouth of Arrow (Pryer) creek. Eagle Elk was then about twenty years of age, and thinks there were a thousand men on each side, the Sioux being aided by Cheyenne and Arapaho. The fight lasted from daylight until darkness, with neither side victorious. Each lost about ten killed and many wounded. Eagle Elk fought under Crazy Horse (Eagle Elk was his nephew) against General Mills at Tongue river, and under the same leader in the Custer fight. He fasted in the Black Hills four days and four nights, but had no vision, and never acquired any fighting medicine.
