Actually, the photograph of "Red Bear's Family" is mislabeled. Remember, we have already posted and discussed Howard's photograph of Red Bear's family, from the Cowan auction site. This new stereoview on Ebay should have been labeled "Spotted Tail's Family." This exact same image, properly labeled, is pasted in the diaries of John G. Bourke.
The unidentified stereoview of an Indian in front of a building was taken by Howard at Fort Bridger, sometime between 1875-77. The building is Judge Carter's post trader store located on the edge of the garrison. I suspect that the unidentified Indian wrapped in a blanket in the image is a Shoshone, probably of Washakie's band.

This photo of Arapaho headmen is currently at Heritage Auctions credited to Daniel Mitchell; a very similar photo, but taken inside Fort Robinson, has been credited to Howard. The dress is the same so this has got to be the same photographer, right? Wasn't Howard at Robinson after Mitchell left?

The Howard photo: A closer view of the photo on the Heritage site: Another photo which MIGHT have some bearing on this: A photo of a photographer (or of someone posing as a photographer, perhaps). Is this someone photographing Howard or Mitchell? Is it Howard or Mitchell photographing someone else? Could it be James Hamilton? Maybe both cameras belong to the owner of the 'picture gallery.' Great photo, nevertheless...

Mmm, the building in the picture right above is the same building that American Horse and family are sitting outside in the new Heritage Auction picture (see American Horse thread). Or the PICTURES shingle features in both photo's.

I am speechless! Sorry to have been off line for some time. I had missed these photographs on the Heritage Auctions. They are absolutely astounding! They include a mixture of images from D. S. Mitchell, Private Charles Howard, Stanley J. Morrow, and James Hamilton. There are views I have never seen before of the Red Cloud Agency and Camp Robinson; also views of both of the temporary cantonments located near the post. Great view of the stage station on White Clay Creek! Need to figure out more about the collection.

I think that the wonderful photograph of the photographer taking the group shot at his studio is by James H. Hamilton. It is probably his image #165 labeled "Photographing Indians at Red Cloud." There is also one in this Heritage Auction series showing two native individuals looking at a viewer and stereo cards. I suspect that this is Hamilton's "#170 Learning the Use of the Stereoscope."
I did a little digging tonight. P. T. Buckley, whose name appears on the back of the images, was Peter T. Buckley (1847-1910) who homesteaded in Nebraska in 1871. In his brief biography, the following regarding this time period: "During the gold excitement in the Black Hills he was at Camp Robinson for two years, and did well in a financial way. He returned from the Black Hills in 1877..."
There appear to be 82 stereoviews in the Buckley collection, which are all views he could have purchased from the photographers as they are visiting Red Cloud Agency in 1876 and 1877. They are just wonderful photographs!!!

Good morning, everyone: Cowan's Auctions just sold another set of images with Charles Howard imprints: www.cowanauctions.com/auctions/item.aspx?ItemId=128220 Most of these appear to be reprints of other photographers' work but one or two of them may be original Howard images. Several of the reprints we have discussed before but a few of these are new portraits! ephriam

A new set of Howard photographs purchased by the Huntington Library have recently been scanned and put online, including this great view of the Red Cloud Agency in northwestern Nebraska.

Nice, Dietmar. I've only seen Red Bear before (and maybe Spotted Tail's family). Can they be blown up any further? I'm curious about the Two Strike image.
