This period, beginning with the retaliations for Sand Creek, when the Cheyenne's presented the Southern Oglala's, Minniconjou's and Brulé's with the war pipe that they accepted, and ending with the conclusion of Red Cloud's War is utterly fascinating and there are a number of things I'd like to know more about, so I hope this thread can turn into a small knowledge base on that.
But some of my research creates new questions, many in fact, but I'll just start with two.
The first question I have is about Ite Nonpa, Two Face of the Oglala's. I've understood him to be mostly a peace chief and during this time period all I know is he met with General Mitchell in August of '64 and the was hanged in May of '65 for the treatment of a captive woman.
According to McDermott in Circle of Fire, Two Face and his Oglala party were with some Northern Cheyenne's when they attacked Gittrell's ranch (he wrote 'Ackley's or Gillette's' but further research shows it was called Gittrell's) on January 25th '65.
The large combined force of Southern Cheyenne, Lakota and Arapaho that shutdown the Overland and destroyed dozens of stations and ranches and killed hundreds did not send messengers to the Powder River bands to let them know they were coming north until a week or more after this raid where Two Face is supposedly running with Northern Cheyennes. And the northern bands, as far as I know did not have any war parties involved in the January raids.
Is this statement in Circle of Fire true or a mistake and if true who could Two Face be raiding with? A small northern war party of an affiliated warrior society? Was he actually there and taking part?
The second and most important question and one that I hope starting this thread will help explain, is what bands constituted the 'Southern' Oglala? And where were their winter camps and summer hunting grounds most often at? Which of these were most often camping with or near the Dog Soldier's?
Did these southern bands of Oglala's (and Brulé and Minniconjou) move into the Powder and Tongue Country with the rest of the Lakota, Arapaho and Cheyenne in February '65?
(Note to Admins: I am also interested in the other Lakota bands and especially the Cheyenne during this period of heavy conflict, but I didn't want to start a similar thread for each band/division, scattering the information, but I couldn't find a good section of the forum for an 'all in one' thread on a 1865-1868 overview discussion of battles and movements of all these allied peoples)
