Skinner Inc. has an upcoming auction which contains a very interesting winter count on muslin, one I haven't seen before. I believe this to be a Hunkpapa count, but the keeper's name has unfortunately not been recorded. Description by Skinner reads: Historic Sioux Muslin Winter Count, c. 1930, the highly detailed painting is a later copy, probably depicting the years 1823-1908, based on number 11, "The Year the Stars Fell," eighty-five depictions of important events laid out in five vertical sections, number 59 probably portrays Hunkpapa chief Sitting Bull and his people being taken to their reservation on a steamboat, 115 x 36 in.The image of the total muslin is in low resolution, but I have taken the higher resolution close ups and created a single hires image to share. I haven't tried to match the numbers with dates yet, but maybe we could work on this together in this thread?

Quick analysis shows that the count can be closely linked to Long Soldier's Hunkpapa winter count.

60: that's a black soldier, isn't it? Black soldiers were sent to 'guard' Sitting Bull's people at Fort Randall, weren't they?

Good catch!
The man opposite is of course Sitting Bull himself, as evidenced by the name glyph.
