I don't have Griffin's book, I've read only that passus in google.books, so I have a question if someone knows more about this alliance. I would be very grateful
I read about an alliance between Mescaleros and Nokonis formed around 1846. As Brian DeLay (War of a thousand deserts, p. 399 note 33) puts it:
"For Mescalero population figures, see note 6, chapter 5, above. In August 1846 Butler and Lewis reported that five hundred Mescaleros and thirty-five hundred “Esreequetees” (a Mescalero ethonym) had “formed an alliance and acquisition to” a Comanche division they called the “Nocoonees,” referring to the Nokonis, a division that begins to appear in the documents only around this time. The authors added that the Mescaleros “have heretofore been at war with the Camanches, but recently become their allies, and are now at war with Mexico.” See P. M. Butler and M. G. Lewis to W. Medill, Washington, D.C., Aug. 8, 1846, in Senate Rep. Com. 171, 30th Cong., 1st sess. For similar observations, see Robert S. Neighbors to W. Medill, Austin, Jan. 6, 1847, House Ex. Doc. 100, 29th Cong., 2nd sess."
I would be very grateful for information about Gomez though.
