Luke Big Turnip was, indeed, with Buffalo Bill and was photographed by Kasebier:

Back to the 1890 Pine Ridge census, where Big Turnip's family is found listed as part of the Oyuhpe band, Wounded Knee District. We have:
Big Turnip, Tipsinla Tanka, age 43 [born c. 1846-47] Lone Woman, Winyan isnala, wife, age 36 [born c. 1853-54] Red Calf, Warpe luta win, son, age 14 [born c. 1875-76] White Head, Nata ska, son, age 12 [born c. 1877-78]
The name Warpe luta win actually translates as Red Leaf Woman - an anomaly I can't explain. Can't say for sure which of these sons was Luke Big Turnip.
I can tell you that this name Big Turnip is very old.

Like Grahame, I had saved the Käsebier picture as Luke Big Turnip. But he is rather Kills Close To The Lodge aka Sitting Holy. The man identified as Big Turnips in the photo below looks more similar to the one in the photo with Black Elk, I think: Holy Frog and Big Turnips Some sites have these two men as Knaska Wakan (aka Holy Frog, aka Willie Holy Frog), Ptecala Luka (aka Red Calf, aka Luke Big Turnip), Oglala, 1900

Although designated as "Blackfoot Chief" here, this seems to me the same Big Turnip as in the last two photos:

Both of the above are also in this picture: "Commissioner George Creel at buffet luncheon with Sioux family (Mr. & Mrs. Big Turnip), August 1939. Big Turnip and family participated in the Indians exhibition at the Golden Gate Exposition." (Library of Congress)

The woman in the above pictures is probably Sophie/Sophia Fast Elk, born ca. 1878. She married Luke Big Turnip and lived until 1960. Luke died in 1941.
I wonder if she is the same person as Sophia (Runs Against) Big Turnip, who is photographed with the "Manderson Sewing Club".

You're right about the Kasebier photo. That's clearly the same man with Black Elk.
