Am currently looking into the Great Lakota Council near Bear Butte in August 1857. This could be considered one of the key councils in Lakota history, with all of the tribal divisions discussing the response to Euro-American encroachment and the establishment of what they considered the current & future Lakota domain, yet I have not found any winter count so far that makes note of this significant event. Seems remarkable to me that this would not have been recorded by any of the Lakota historians, but apparently there were other, more compelling, events that year. If anyone does find a mention in a Lakota winter count of the Bear Butte council, please post them here!
