I found little international coverage in the net, but this very sad news was covered at least in most newspapers in Germany:
Richard Erdoes, well known author of many books about American Indian history, died at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico on 16. July 2008 at age 96.
The LAKOTA COUNTRY TIMES says about him: [He] influenced the lives of generations of Lakota people and other tribes by describing Native life and their spiritual culture and essentially preserving it for future generations.
These are some of the books he is known for:
Richard Erdoes: Lame Deer – Seeker of Visions. Richard Erdoes: American Indian Myths and Legends Mary Crow Dog und Richard Erdoes: Ohitika Woman Mary Crow Dog und Richard Erdoes: Lakota Woman Richard Erdoes: Saloons of the Old West Dennis Banks, Richard Erdoes: Ojibwa Warrior: Dennis Banks and the Rise of the American Indian Movement. Norman, Oklahoma, University of Oklahoma Press, 2004
I think most of you have at least read one of his books. I recommend them all, of course.

I read two of his works, Lame Deer-Seeker of Visions and Mary Crow Dog - Lakota Woman. Both of them are true gems, well written biographies/ sort of autobiographies of truly remarkable people !
