Lately I read about a Hunkpapa leader Little Knife (Me-nah-che-kan = Mila cikala). In June or in July 1872 some three hundred lodges of Lakotas crossed the boundary to the North-West Territories, Canada. The leader was Little Knife, an "older man closely associated with the non-reservation Hunkpapas under Four Horns, Black Moon and Sitting Bull".
John F. Finerty, the "war correspondent“ of the Chicago Times, described Little Knife as "a man for whom high regard was felt by white and red men alike, because he was truthful, honorable, and for a savage, humane even to his enemies”.
After LBH -in October 1876- it is known that Little Knife visited Fort Peck and then moved into Canada. And on Nov. 17, 1876 Little Knife and Crow, arrived at Jean-Louis Légaré's trading post at Wood Mountain.
What do we know about Little Knife? Is there a photo of the man?
