There is no set format. It depends on where you are (Northern or Southern Plains, East, Northwest, etc) and what "type" of event you are at and who the sponsors are: local, honoring, benefit, Sodality/Society, tribal/community annual, mega, etc.

Wakalapi: He asks the question in the Indian News department, "Grand Entry Song and then what" ? As I live on the Spirit Lake Nation (generally termed Fort Totten, ND) which is where the Grand Entry was first started for the 100 Anniversary of the 1867 Treaty. Before this there was no Grand Entry, the announcer kept calling for dancers until one and two's they came and started dancing. one contest each was held for the men, women, and children ($25.00 first prize, $15.00 second, and $10.00 third. So for $150.00 the Pow-wow club had the prize money. The singers (drums) didn't get paid, if a visiting group or groups attended, various spectators or committee members donated to them. Then a meal break, maybe one food stand. This is what an old time pow-wow looked like.
After the Grand Entry, the Flag Song is sung followed by the Soldiers Dance. introduction of the celebrities and pow-wow princes and princesses. Then usually a round of dancing, contests for the children, followed by the adults in various categories, indesperced by dancing. This is what most modern Contest pow-wows look like. De miye do. Right after the Grand Entry comes the Flag Song and Victory Song. Posting of the colors, introduction of the big shots and then an inter-tribal (regular) dance. After that the pow-wow committee decides what comes next. Years ago it was just one pow-wow song after another. Now it seems it is just a contest pow-wow with one contest after another.
The original idea of having the Grand Entry comes from The Fort Totten Days pow-wow marking the 100th anniversary of the Sisseton - Wahpeton Treaty of 1867. Fort Totten had the first Grand Entry and all the participant people took the idea back home. Now all the pow-wows have a Grand Entry. Fort Totten Days also was the first event to offer a Five Hundred Dollar first Prize. Before it was $25 first prize, $15 second, and $10 third prize.
They also claim that they started to have the Jingle Dress contest for the visiting Ojibwe. However the contest now is not the same as the original Healing Dance. They jump around, wave their fans, dance backwards, etc.
