I have worked my way through the Welch papers.

Very many useful hints , but also lots of confusion and errors . To start with " Welch was the first white man ADOPTED by the Sioux ." There were many before and after him . E.g. starting with J. C. Craiger ( Adopted By Two Strike ) to David H. Miller ( Adopted By One Bull and Iron Hail ) and many more . So nothing special.
A lot of interesting information about John Grass, certainly a great man on the Standing Rock Reservation . But I am more than skeptical about his involvement in the Battle of Little Big Horn (I found not a single interview with a participant in the battle, which mentioned the name John Grass or Pezhi). The soldier Welch will have guessed that only Lakotas who were involved either in Red Cloud 's War or the Battle of the Little Bighorn will "survive" in history. Therefore his constant effort to bring John Grass to the "Little Big Horn river ".
Welch (or his contributor Angela Boleyn)also confuses several times the Oglala Grass with the Blackfeet Grass. E.G.: Who signed the Laramie Treaty 1868?
The Oglala Loafer Sub-Chief "Pah-gee" (Grass) signed the Fort Laramie Treaty on 25 May 1868 at Laramie, the Blackfeet "Pe-ji" (The Grass aka Used-As-A-Shield) signed the Treaty on July 2 at Fort Rice.
Used-As-A-Shield, 1872
, Grass, the Oglala 1891
Welch goes on to claim that John Grass had also signed the treaty with the Blackfeet of Fort Sully, 1865. But in fact the contract was signed by his father Used-As-A-Shield. There would be still some more to be noted, but something funny at the end: Welch's wife Adelaide dined with Libby Custer and Sitting Bull! See below! Wow!
