Calico
Mini-Xu-hai
Ogalala
64 years old
14 years old when he first went on the warpath. It was against the Pawnees. There were two leaders Fire Thunder and Grass. They killed one of the enemy.
At the age of 22 he took the pipe and led his first war party. It was against the Pawnees. he killed one of the enemy on a creek and took the gun away from them. They took 29 head of horses from the enemy. In this party there were but 9 Sioux.
Later he led another party of 9 men and 2 women against the Washoes. They went to the village and waited for a chance. They saw an Indian coming so he and 5 others charged on him. They did not kill the man but two Sioux counted coup on him and Calico was third. As he was about to strike him he horse threw him and he and the enemy scuffled on the ground. The enemy was larger and was reaching for his knife and Calico could not see his friends. As the enemy threw him Calico saw his forgotten six shooter. He then grabbed it and shot the enemy who staggered back but returned with the knife when Calico shot him in the breast and killed him. When he had scalped him someone said: "Give me that scalp." Looking up, he saw a friend returning with his horse. He gave the scalp and turning to the enemy took another scalp.
The enemy came in numbers but he and his friend escaped on their horses.
He was in 8 big battles mostly against the Omahas, Pawnees, Washoes.
He was in 4 big battles against the soldiers along the Platte river. Most of his life was spent in the south and southeast.
Besides these he was in many smaller battles.
He counted coup five times. He counted first coup on two Nez Perces met in the south.
Calico was chief of a band of Sioux called Ta-pi-sle-cha, "Split Liver." He became chief through his brave deeds. Red Cloud and others suggested that he be made chief because he was brave and was always kind to the poor. This was about 1874.
He considers the greatest leader of his people to be Crazy Horse but he got this from others a he was not in the same region. Crazy Horse was his cousin. In the south Weazel Bear was the greatest leader and the next best was Walks-Under-the-Ground father of Picket Pin.
He considers Custer the greatest leader of the whites because he led his men against the enemy while other Generals let their men go in first. Custer dashed in and lost his life, therefore he was greatest of the white leaders.
