New to this site I am hoping someone may be able to help me. On a trip to the battlefields of northern France a while back I came across the burial site of Joseph Standing Buffalo. On return to UK I found quite easily, a lot of information about him and a suggestion that he was the grandson of Chief Sitting Bull. Please can anyone tell me from which line this is? i.e who was his grand mother. I have a very basic tree of Sitting Bull within a book but there is no mention of Joseph or his father Julius. Thanks in advance
Brian

Brian: The Standing Buffalo you are asking about is a Sisitun Dakota from Standing Buffalo Reserve in Saskatchewan, Canada. Check out the Standing Buffalo book and also Famous Dakota Chiefs, Volume one. By Mark Diedrich, Rochester, MN markdiedrich@hotmail.com

Igarcia, Thank you for replying and giving me the information, I was aware that Standing Buffalo was Canadian but in most articles written about him including the information from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, it mentions the fact that Joseph Standing Buffalo is a grandson of Sitting Bull, I am trying to establish his line back and am hoping that someone will know from which of Sitting Bulls wives he descended. Thanks again

I think what happens is when our people go to Europe people always want to connect our people to one of the Chief even if they are not related. Like Mr Garcia said he is a descendant of Standing Buffalo, who is Sisseton or Sititun which means he is Dakota and Sitting Bull was Hunkpapa Lakota, they are from two different parts of the Nation. At this point Standing buffalo is not related to Sitting Bull

Hello Ladonna, Thank you for your help, I understand the explanation. I wrongly assumed that the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and one or two others would have carried out some research into accuracy before taking at face value what is obviously a wrong assumption. I do realise how difficult it can be, My own Great grandmother was a Canadian Indian(New Brunswick)who's family originated in N.E USA (Mass.I believe)but over the years I have been led down so many blind alleys due to misinformation given to me by my own family members that it has now become virtually impossible to research I think. Thanks again for your time and help Brian

Brian: Please don't give up hope on finding who is this Sitting Bull (Tatankaiyotake). You have to remember that there are many people with the same name. I knew (he has gone south)a Hidatsa man who had Sitting Bull as his Indian name. You mention Julius Standing Buffalo in your first post. I remember this name from reading Mark Diedrich's book on Standing Buffalo. Get the book. Louie
