Greetings. My Great Grandmother on my Mother's side was from the south eastern united states. She had black hair, brown eyes, dark skin (as did one of her three children), and her facial bone structure also appeared native. It's been relayed to me by family members that she had Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Natchez blood. I've done a little research, and I'm not sure about how the latter is possible, because it's my understanding they were wiped out by the French. However, there are some stories that were passed down to me about the Natchez part, and I'm wondering about the possibility that one of her ancestors married into either the Choctaw or the Chickasaw. I don't know who her parents were, but her maiden name was Sally Olivia Walton, and she would have been born in the later 1800's. I know my Grandmother spent much of her early life in Mississippi and Tennessee, and I think my Great Grandmother was likely from that area.
I was told, among other things, that the leadership of the Natchez tribe was secretly vested in the females of the tribe, not the males. The reason given is they were more likely to survive being as that women were not warriors, and sometimes females were taken captive rather than killed, so the line would have more chance of survival being vested in the women.... my grandmother called it something or other lodge. (I was young and don't remember exactly now.) I am also told the Natchez did not originate from where they were located in the south, but rather from "the purple mountains".
I realize that it may be hard to trace that name due to various factors, but if anyone recognizes it and can give me more information on her background, it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Further info: My great Grandmother appears in census records as Sallie, not Sally. She was born in Mississippi in approximately 1887, depending upon the time of year the census was taken vs. her exact date of birth. Her father is identified as being born in Mississippi, her mother from South Carolina, but there are no names or dob's for them that I have been able to locate thus far. At some point after being married to my Great Grandfather, she shows up in a census for Shelby County, TN. After his early death, she shows, with her three young children, on a census in Arkansas, and I know they spent time in Mississippi after his passing as well, then later on, to California where she is interred.
Upon doing some more research, I've come to understand there were Natchez survivors that did in fact take up residence with other nearby tribes. Some of whom likely traveled with the Creeks and Cherokee during their "move" to the Arkansas territory, and still populate areas of Oklahoma and South Carolina (which happens to be where my Great Great Grandmother was born, though that may be a coincidence), and possibly the Caribbean island of Hispaniola as well.
I have no interest in seeking out my ancestry in hope or desire for any tribal benefits. I'm interested in tracing/knowing my roots, and hopefully come to have a better understanding of some experiences I have had over the years that I feel, for lack of a better explanation, simultaneously very deeply connected to, yet also very disconnected from. At a fairly young age I was prone to having waking dreams/visions, which came with both images and smells, and they were of animals. For example, in the first one I can remember, there were three species of animals. First, a large bird akin to depictions of a phoenix, which had an associated smell of a musky/spicy incense. When descending from the sky, it came down much like a rocket, was male, and gave me a message of not being alone and of comfort. Next was of a large brown bear in a cave, female, there was a stream flowing in the cave, and some white, "lilly like" flowers, which had a light, "clean" floral smell to them. The bear did not speak to me however. I followed her as she wandered about the cave waiting for what she had to say, but she would only glance at me briefly and chuckle softly, which I came to realize a bit later, had occurred whenever I felt impatient and/or unsure why I was there if there was no message, as if she could read my mind. Another was of a large group of woodpeckers flying by my window.. while this last was also in a waking dream, it left the impression it was more between "worlds"...in the transition between the vision/dream state and reality, as if they were carrying me between them. So, given these visions/waking dreams of animals, and stories of some Native ancestors, yet being raised "white", you can perhaps see why I'm trying to "connect the dots", as it were.
Respectfully (I hope), CuriousOne

Natchez, was another name for Chief Naiche of the Chiricahua band of Jicarilla Apache or N’de. Their original homeland ranged from Northern New Mexico to include what is now southern Colorado; all the way down to Chihuahua, Mexico. Hence the name chief Chihuahua.
Naiche or Natchez was the son of Cochise And fought alongside Geronimo during the “Apache Wars” in the 1860’s to when Geronimo signed peace treaties that restricted their free range to barren reservations. He was brother to Taza whom was the first son of Cochise. Some stories say that Taza died and that’s the reason why Naiche became chief of Chiricahua Band. Others say that Their was an argument over a woman in which Naiche and his taza were in a knife fight. Taza lived but, went on to lead a rival Band of Apache. Maybe the “Chaconen”
The Chiricahua were moved to Ft. Sill Oklahoma, Cuba, Alcatraz. Not all of them “made it” to the reservation after the treaty was signed... some died, some became rogue “Bedonkohè” or Bronco Apaches. Some escaped Cuba and took up with the Seminole tribe and others such as the Mescaleros, Souix, Ute, Pueblo etc...Some never left but, instead assumed Spanish identities and blended in with the Hispanic populations of Southern Colorado, New Mexico and Texas.
This is to the best of my knowledge which is very limited LOL . So please forgive any in accuracies. I welcome all civil discussion thank you
